Coeliac disease isn't going to stop Imogen living her best life. Her mum Kerry recently shared with us how they got on with their first gluten free Christmas and now, we're moving on to birthday parties.
Living gluten free
As a parent, when Immy was first diagnosed with coeliac disease, I would get so anxious, stressed and concerned in relation to any birthday party or event. But I've learnt to realise that it's okay and now I try to make living gluten free as stress free as possible for me and Immy.
Here are a few tips to help birthday parties feel more manageable for you and a child with coeliac disease:
Top Tips
- Call the parents of the party and discuss your child's needs and cross contamination to help them understand. Let them know that it's okay to not hand out birthday cake and ask if they are they able to provide GF options?
- Speak or visit the party venue and ask to see the food menu, what gluten free options they have (if any) and look in their kitchen to check for cross contamination
- Take your own food - Ask the venue what foods they are serving and prepare similar foods at home to take with you
- Make some gluten free cupcakes / birthday cake and cut into slices to place in the freezer. Defrost the night before to take to the party
- Use Juvela rolls to make Mini Pizzas and keep them warm in a thermal flask - it works!
People will tend to feel bad that your child is 'missing out' but explain that your child would be happier not feeling poorly. They will just be happy that they have been invited and that they will have their own special treats.
