Gurinder's Story

Gurinder's tests started in May 2010, and her coeliac disease diagnosis was confirmed in October 2010.

When did you get diagnosed with coeliac disease?

The tests started in May 2010, and the diagnosis was confirmed in October 2010.

How did you feel about the diagnosis?

Not great. I felt really sad, deflated and even cried for a good couple of weeks!

What was your relationship with food like before you were diagnosed with coeliac disease?

Amazing, I could eat what I wanted when I wanted too and anywhere…well, until the bloating and stomach cramps started approx. 1.5 years prior to diagnosis.

Have you ever felt like you have missed out because of coeliac disease?

Yes, most of the time! Especially when you're at a function or in a restaurant and people are eating something that I can't.

Did you notice a difference in mood and health after sticking to your gluten-free diet?

Yes, pretty much instantly - I was less bloated and didn't have these awful stomach cramps anymore, which resulted in a more happy 'G'.

What does eating "well" mean to you?

Eating what I enjoy!

What's your favourite Juvela product and what do you make with it?

White Mix, I'd love to take credit, but I can't…my sister, Bhinde, makes the most delicious cakes with this flour. We all enjoy eating them the most when they're fresh out of the oven!

What advice would you give to your younger self or to a newly diagnosed coeliac about what you now know about coeliac disease and gluten-free foods?

Stock up on your favourite gluten free foods when they're on offer or have those famous yellow stickers on them. It's not actually that bad being gluten free. Some foods are a bit hit and miss, some will taste amazing and some not so much, just try them for yourself.

And finally, what's your top tip for staying positive?

Accept that it's ok to not be ok. Listen to your mind/body and just do what both are telling you to do, go with the flow and take each day as it comes…everything will be just fine!
