When were you diagnosed with coeliac disease?

How did you feel about the diagnosis?

I had been unwell for a few months with bad rashes all over my body and wouldn't grow properly, so my parents and I were so glad to finally have an answer.

If you take a prescription, how did you find setting it up?

We had to ask the dietitian consultant at the hospital. It is not something they would have mentioned straight away, but it was definitely worth asking.

How did you find adjusting to a gluten free diet?

I had no problems, and luckily, my dad is a very good cook - his homemade gluten-free Yorkshire puddings are the best! I just felt sad I couldn't eat any of the party food or cake at my friends' birthday parties.

What is your favourite Juvela product / recipe?

My mum bakes bread using the White Mix. We also use the flour to make bread rolls, cookies, gingerbread, and Victoria sponge as well as red velvet cake. I love baking with my mum.

Do you think it's important to have a coeliac disease diagnosis?

Yes, it has helped me to start growing properly and to get rid of my anaemia and itchy rashes, which used to make me feel so miserable.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of asking their GP to be tested for coeliac disease?

Keep asking until you get the answer. 1 in 100 people have coeliac disease, so it is important to get tested.

What advice would you give to someone newly diagnosed with coeliac disease?

Embrace the changes in diet. There are so many yummy things that are gluten-free! Ask your parents to help you bake some gluten-free goodies. Tell your family, friends and school that you can't eat gluten. Explore shops and cafés/restaurants for their choice of gluten-free food. Follow websites like Juvela for great recipes and other ideas!
