Juvela Bread: Our Story

Here at Juvela our bakers have been expertly perfecting our authentic tasting gluten-free bread range for 25 years.

To make sure our bread bakes and tastes just like real bread we make our dough from wheat flour that has the gluten removed. We bake bread that tastes as authentic as ‘real’ bread, just without the gluten. It meets international standards for gluten-free foods and has been enjoyed for over 25 years by people who follow a gluten-free diet.

Just like real bread all our loaves and rolls are fortified with essential vitamins and iron.

So, pleased to be able to buy juvela bread in Tesco, but there seems to be only a few loaves available there when I go. It is a shame I cannot buy direct from yourselves the manufacturer in bulk on a monthly basis and put them in my freezer, like we could when a prescription was available. The only criticism I have is that the bread is so nice that when I manage to buy a loaf I cannot stop eating it and it soons goes.

I was so pleased to be able to buy juvela bread from Tesco, there seems to be only a few loaves available in the Tesco Supermarket when I go, perhaps because they are bought so quickly. I would like to be able to purchase from the manufacturers in bulk on a monthly basis to put in my freezer, as I did when I had a prescription for it. It is a shame I am unable to as juvela does not have this option. The only criticism I have is juvela bread is so nice and soft and the taste so good it is hard to stop eating it after a few slices. It also has the benefit for me not to have maize starch or cornflour in it that I am allergic to. I have missed not being able to eat juvela bread, but will take full advantage now I can purchase it. The video was most informative.

Thank you for your feedback Mary, we are sorry to hear that your store didn’t have many loaves when you visited. How much is ordered is up to each individual Tesco store so you could maybe provide your feedback to the stores manager that you would like more to be stocked. Kind Regards, The Juvela Team

Hi, Great to hear that you enjoy our gluten free fresh bread!! We are currently working with Tesco to try and get the stock level increased. We would suggest that you also have a quick chat with the store manager when you are next in to ask them to increase their orders as this will help too. Kind Regards, The Juvela Team.

Currently the only products available in selected Tesco stores are our white and fibre fresh bread and rolls. Does this mean that we can ACTUALLYbuy mix from any pharmacy?
Does the fact that you are now being sold in Tesco ,is this because Geius is closing the UK factory?

          • Juvela Admin

Hi Gill, you can buy any Juvela product from the pharmacy, however, check the price first as they can add significant mark-ups to our products. You can also buy them from the online pharmacy Chemist.net We are moving into retail to make our bread accessible to our customers who can no longer get it because of prescription restrictions. We hope to make other products available through retail however, this is dependent on the retailers. The Juvela Team

          • Yvonne holmes

Hi don’t bother with chemist.net as they do not deliver when you order nor is there anybody to answer the phone to complain nor do they ring you back Yvonne holmes

It’s really great that Juvela bread is available in Tesco’s BUT I feel this might be a move in response to CCGs cutting g/f products available on prescription? If only certain stores are involved it disadvantages those who live where there are no large supermarkets and / or have no transport to reach them!

At last, more gluten free items to choose from! With more and more people being diagnosed with Coeliac disease, the supermarkets are beginning to carry a larger range of gluten free items, and bread is a very important part of a staple diet, I myself have been a diagnosed coeliac for the last 20 years, and it is only fairly recently that I have been able to enjoy something as simple as a sandwich! I love your bread, but haven’t yet tried the rolls, I hope my local Tescos will soon stock them.. Good work Juvela! Keep it up !

As a Coeliac I loved Juvela bread and mix for about 15 years until the Norfolk CCG’s stopped prescribing gluten free foods, so it was great to see it it Tesco’s recently.
Unfortunately though, “Genius” were promoting their 535gm loaves at the same time at £2 per loaf, so it didn’t get the Juvela stuff off to a very good start.
One other point was that the “best before” date on the closure tape was either missing altogether or unreadable on many loaves, again not too encouraging.

Hello, people with coeliac disease are told to avoid wheat, barley and rye which is correct however it is the GLUTEN in the wheat, rye and barley that they react to (not the actual wheat, barley and rye). Our products go through vigorous testing to make sure they are safe for people with coeliac disease as the gluten is fully removed from the wheat. Our bread is well within the international codex standards of being below 20 parts per million, ours is actually below 5 parts per million so if you have coeliac disease we can reassure you have safely been providing our bread on prescription for people with coeliac disease for over 25 years. We use gluten free wheat starch which should not be confused with normal wheat starch However if you have been told you have a specific wheat intolerance (in addition to coeliac disease) the bread wouldn’t be safe for you. We hope this makes sense, if you have any questions please let us know. We choose to use gluten free wheat starch in some of our products as it produces superior baking results that most closely resemble the quality of gluten-containing foods in terms of taste and texture. Our customers tell us that they want bread that tastes as close to real bread as possible, so we like to use high quality ingredients to make authentic tasting gluten-free bread. Your bread sounds delicious, only I’m allergic to wheat and gluten (coeliac) It would be nice if you could provide wheat and gluten free products.

    Reply
    • Juvela Admin

      Hi Jackie,

Our gluten free range have historically been produced for people that have been medically diagnosed with coeliac and are required to follow a strict gluten free diet.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley and various other grains. It is the gluten (protein) in wheat and other grains that people with coeliac disease have an autoimmune reaction to.

Our flour is made from gluten-free wheat starch. This means that the gluten has been removed from the wheat making it a suitable substitute ingredient for the production of gluten-free foods. The removal of the gluten in gluten free wheat starch is conducted under strict quality controls and is rigorously tested to ensure that it meets the Codex standard for gluten-free foods. This is an internationally agreed standard that specifies that all gluten-free foods must be below 20ppm (twenty parts per million) to be suitable to be labelled as gluten-free. At this level people with coeliac disease can safely eat these foods.

Gluten-Free Wheat Starch should not be confused with normal wheat starch which is not gluten-free.

We choose to use gluten free wheat starch in some of our products as it produces superior baking results that most closely resemble the quality of gluten-containing foods in terms of taste and texture. Our customers tell us that they want bread that tastes as close to real bread as possible, so it is a simple matter for us of using high quality ingredients to make authentic tasting gluten-free bread.

If you have been diagnosed with either wheat allergy or wheat intolerance in addition to coeliac disease, then those of our products which contain gluten free wheat starch are not suitable for you.

Hope this helps. Kind Regards, The Juvela Team.

I felt slightly anxious last week when I got a call from my doctors to say that our area was no longer providing gluten free prescriptions! My daughter is 12 but was diagnosed at Just 18 months. The only bread she has ever eaten is Juvela fresh white. Every month I would get a box of 8 but not anymore!! Sad I know but I was happy to see the exact same bread on the shelf in my local Tesco superstore. Albeit, at £2.80 a loaf this will increase my shopping budget!! Oh well, will have to lay off the chocolate and alcohol! Thank you for making this product available on the shelves! Very informative video and reading some of the comments above even I have learnt something new!

I haven’t seen Juvela in our area for ages so will now have to visit Tesco to try it again. Unfortunately this is a 7 mile round trip through very heavy traffic taking about 20 mins each way for one loaf. Not the most environmentally friendly idea. As per someone else’s post, I wish that Sainsbury’s would stock, as I can only get Genius near me 🙁 so dry and tasteless. Good luck with the re-launch !

Thanks for the good luck wishes Amanda. Although our launch into retails has been through Tesco it may be that in time other supermarkets may also stock our products…keep your eye on our website for any updates!! Kind Regards, The Juvela Team.

I am not allowed gluten free products on prescription any more so may try your bread again when I pass a Tesco. As a coeliac I am tired of having to go to so many different supermarkets to get different products. They are always more expensive too, of course.

Video first – I wish Juvela could have spent just a little more money and hired a live presenter – the drawings are hideous and makes the
products look SO out of date.
While it is reassuring to find out that Juvela Bread contains less than
5 parts per million gluten – I still feel very nervous of trying ANY
gluten containing product. Of course Juvela bread does taste
just like real bread because it is made with wheat flour – so it would!
BUT I wish Juvela would make a brown load without ANY seeds –
then even I might try it.

Hi, Really sorry that you were disappointed with the video, we have generally had a really good response. However your suggestions will certainly be considered in the future. Our gluten free fresh fibre loaf does not contain seeds and it is a brown loaf equivalent. With regards to our product, only foods that contain less than 20 parts per million can be classed as gluten free. You can be assured that when eating our products it is completely safe for your gluten free diet. Kind Regards, the Juvela Team

I have been diagnosed as a Coeliac 37 years ago, it was nice to get Juvela several years later. I haven’t found anything to compare with Juvela, so use it all the time now. I used to make a lot of my own cakes etc when the prescription was used. But that is a thing of the past now, as the makings are so expensive. Tesco is by far the best supermarket for gluten free food, it will be even better now Juvela will be sold in their stores.

Really miss Juvela bread and flour since losing GF prescriptions. I’ve been Coeliac all my life and Juvela was the best bread I’ve had over my 42 years! Haven’t got a Tesco that near me. Would be great if you could stock it in Morrisons or Sainsburys! Video good but kept stopping.

Briefly had Juvela when first diagnosed but then was no longer available on prescription and was not in our local supermarkets. Unfortunately there is no Tesco nearby, which is a shame as it was the best bread I tried.

I’m glad you have made your bread available in shops. I’m a celiac and when our local authorities stopped the free prescriptions (juvela bread I had), I was forced to try other products that don’t even come close to your bread. I was so excited when I found your bread in stores and have bought many loaves and will continue to do so. Thanks

I enjoyed your advert and feel it got across well the message that Juvela have been making gluten free bread for over 25 years. Until gluten free prescribing ceased in my area earlier this year I had been receiving Juvela bread on prescription for several years. I’ll look out for it next time I’m in Tesco. I understand that it’s meant to be in the style of a cartoon but the family at the end, particularly the mum, looked a bit scary/mad.

The price can vary from pharmacy to pharmacy so please always check that you are happy with a price if placing an order). Always excited to try a new GF bread as always chasing the “normal” bread dream!! Fingers crossed for this one. Also hope it’s reasonably priced – one of the really annoying facts of being ceoliac is that we have to pay more for life’s basics such as bread – so unfair that a GF loaf often costs in excess of £2 and quite often nearer £3 when a normal” loaf is half the price!!

It’s great that Juvela bread is available to buy in supermarkets. Since our local CCG has withdrawn all food available on prescription as from December 2016, i have found it difficult to find any other bread that comes anywhere close to Juvela. I always had Juvela bread and a lot of other Juvela products such as Juvela breakfast cereals. I especially like the high fibre bread. I bought a loaf at a Tecso superstore in Barrow in Furness when we were on hols in Lake District. My home town is Bingley West Yorkshire so now looking for a Tesco store near home who stocks it.

Great, good to hear that Tesco (or some outlets) are going to be stocking Juvela bread and rolls. It seems to me that many of the major Supermarkets are replacing known products, such as yours is to the many of us who tried them initially through prescription, with their own GF items. Good to see that there will still be choices available. Hope they will soon be stocking other Juvela items. x

I have been a diagnosed coeliac since the age of 17 and am now 73. I have used Juvela for almost 25 years until this year when my area stopped prescribing. I rushed to Tesco as soon as I heard it was in store and stocked up on bread and rolls. I wish the flour was available at a decent price, my pharmacy is asking £11.50 per box which makes one loaf. Obviously cannot afford this. I also wish the loaf was larger . Just broke my toaster so worth while entering.

Great to see increasing range and availability. Gluten Free is finally, if slowly, leaving the “niche market” label behind and offering some real choice. Thank you!

I enjoyed Juvela rolls for many years on prescription but I have to say that some of the alternatives now available are more appealing. Oat bread and sour dough breads are two examples of the breads I tend to buy now.

So pleased that Juvela is available to buy “off the shelf” now. It’s the only bread my daughter will eat since being diagnosed with Coeliac disease in 2007 and it’s great to have it available as and when we need it.

So disappointed I can no longer get juvela products on prescription. I have been using juvela since I was diagnosed many years ago. It’s like losing an old friend. I enjoyed attending the roadshows and having a chance to try new products, but also watching the cookery demos. It’s good you can now buy it at Tesco’s but I don’t tend to shop there often. Perhaps you can stock it in other stores.

Missed Juvela ordering since the NHS broke up our happy relationship. I’ve not struggled for bread in recent years but your white mix, pizza bases and oats are the best and remain my stock ingredients until they run out. I know I can order direct and I’ll check the Tesco store locator as you are not in mine yet.

Ive been a Coeliac for 65 years you cannot imagine my joy over the years how many products are now available, When I was a child there was nothing , in my teens they only produced a tin of bread which was really dry and not much better when toasted , I gave up for years but the last 10 years I ate Juvela vacuum packed bread on prescription. Since they stopped prescriptions for us I have not seen Juvela bread , I am so glad that it is available in Tesco s now as I’m not so keen on the other brands , so whoopee! thank you Juvela

I always used to have your flour mixes so I could make my own loaf in my bread maker, really miss them. Also I once had some of your delicious crisp reads on Prescription but they the (pct) stopped me getting them and would only allow me flour or bread. Those crisp bread were the best and it would be great to buy them in Tesco if they extend the range. Thanks

At last those of us who are coeliacs can buy the best bread ever. I have so missed the bread and the flour since my CCG stopped prescribing gluten free products. I guess I am one of the lucky ones too as I have 3 tesco stores within 4 miles of home that stock your products. Look forward to being able to buy flour and crackers soon.

Just a relief to be able to try a new gluten free bread. The loaves available at the moment are not great because they’re made with alternative flours. I’m sure Juvela have managed to create a substantial loaf that stays together because it’s made from wheat! Great!!

Hello, if you have an oven with a grill you can use foil to place your bread on to toast to avoid cross contamination. Here is what Coeliac UK advise regarding how to avoid cross contamination- ‘If you are following a gluten free diet, it’s important to not undo all your good work by allowing your gluten free food to be contaminated with food that contains gluten. Even tiny amounts of gluten may cause people with coeliac disease to have symptoms in the short term and gut damage in the longer term. When you’re cooking at home, there are some simple steps to take that will help keep food preparation safe:
      •wipe down surfaces
•clean pots and pans with soap and water
•standard washing up or using a dishwasher will remove gluten
•washing up liquids are fine to use. There are very few that contain gluten, but if they do, standard rinsing will remove any traces
•you do not need to use separate cloths or sponges
•you may want to get separate bread boards to keep gluten free and gluten-containing breads separate
•use a separate toaster or toaster bags or put your bread on some foil under the grill
•use clean oil or a separate fryer for frying gluten free foods
•use different butter knives and jam spoons to prevent breadcrumbs from getting into condiments

with local authorities removing support for Coeliac prescriptions for gluten free products, it is lovely to see that you are getting your delicious products into the stores – let’s hope that consumer power opens the doors for you into all major supermarkets, as they do seem to be catering more widely for us Coeliac’s recently! Be lovely to win the retro toaster so that I have my own ‘gluten free’ toaster!

Hello, we are very sorry to hear you are in a restricted area. Please speak to your GP or Coeliac UK on 0333 332 2033 if your struggling. Tesco set their own price for our bread and rolls, we do not have any control over pricing in store. The fresh loaves are £2.80 and the fresh rolls are £2.20. Kind Regards, The Juvela Team

I have enjoyed your bread when I have been able to get hold of it, I am unable to get your products on prescription. S imply not in the same class as Juvela in both taste & texture. I would urge all users of GF products to support the Juvela brand so the we can look forward to a bigger range with more store coverage. There was no way we could afford to pay the cost the pharmacy was quoting for the items. We tried may different breads but the children didn’t like any of them. While shopping we spotted your white sliced loaf on the shelf at our local Tesco. My son’s face when he saw the loaf on the worktop at home was brilliant. For the past few years since my diagnostic came through, I could see and taste great improvements from Juvela’s gluten free range.
The best one for me are the fibre rolls, oh, they are simply divine.
Hope you can keep up on improvements.😋😋
