Ooh I do love it when I can share a hidden gem with you! For this month’s blog post, I want to tell you about a great place to experience lovely gluten free food. I heard about the Sugar Plum Tea Room in North Wales via a friend of a friend, and had been dying to go for ages! I finally got the opportunity to pay it a visit a couple of weeks ago and can’t wait to tell you all about it…

Lots of lovely gluten free food choices

Being coeliac, you can get so used to scanning the menu quickly and picking out the things that you think will be gluten free prior to deciding what you want (then obviously double checking the suitability when placing your order). Well, at the Sugar Plum it was different for me – I had my eye on the Welsh rarebit and was delighted when the waitress confirmed that they could offer it with gluten free bread.

I was tempted to go for a double portion as I was particularly hungry, however the waitress suggested that I just go for the one portion as I would get two slices of toast with it. I was so glad I took her advice as it was very ample indeed, as you can see! The Welsh Rarebit tasted even better than I’d ever remembered having before and the salad garnish it was served with was lovely and fresh too!

Although the Sugar Plum Tea Room isn’t a completely gluten free restaurant, there is still a great choice of delightful gluten free homemade snacks, both sweet and savoury to try.

Sweet gluten free treats!

Lunch was rounded off with a splendid pot of tea and delicious gluten free nut tiffin… yum.

I was so pleased with my whole experience the Sugar Plum Tea Rooms and think it is a perfect place to eat, with very kind and attentive staff. Although my home town is actually Warrington (an hour or so drive away) it was well worth the few extra miles to enjoy a fantastic lunch with my friends. If I’ve inspired any of you to pay it a visit, I would recommend you book in advance, as during the couple of hours we were there, the tables around us were constantly full, ranging from young mums with babies to retired couples and friends.

You can find out more about the Sugar Plum Tea Room through their lovely website.

Make your own Welsh Rarebit with our recipe

To satisfy my Welsh Rarebit cravings in the meantime, I’m glad that we’ve got an excellent Juvela recipe to have on some gluten free bread until my next chance to pay the Sugar Plum a visit.

I’m sure you already know too that we have lots of great sweet ideas under the Cakes, Puds and Treats section on our website.

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy Easter,

Liz x
