Carved Ham & Gruyere French Toast

An alternative version of the classic French toast recipe - squidgy slices of eggy bread wrapped around thick slices of carved ham and stringy Gruyere cheese and tangy Dijon mustard.

ingredients:

  • 2 slices from JUVELA Gluten-Free Unsliced Loaf, approx 3cm thick
  • 1tsp Dijon mustard*
  • 50g (2oz) thickly sliced ham
  • 50g (2oz) Gruyere cheese
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 75ml (3fl oz) milk
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • ½tbsp olive oil

Oven temperature: 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4

Method:

Using a sharp knife, slit open each slice of bread to form a pocket, leaving 1cm (½") around the edges. Spread the mustard on one side of the pocket and place a slice of ham and cheese inside.

In a large bowl, combine together the eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Dip each side of the pocket into the egg and milk mixture - allow to soak up the liquid for a few seconds.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan and add the bread pockets; fry each side for a couple of minutes until golden brown. Transfer to a baking tray and bake in a pre-heated oven for 10 minutes until cheese is melted.
