What are the symptoms?

Symptoms in adults vary

Symptoms are often confused with those of IBS and can include anemia, weight loss and fatigue. Other signs may be infertility, unexplained abdominal pain and generally feeling unwell. These symptoms can occur together or separately, be mild or severe. Occasionally, the stress of an operation, accident, intestinal infection or pregnancy can trigger the onset of this illness. Juvela have produced a 'Could this be you' awareness campaign detailing the symptoms of coeliac disease.

Symptoms in childhood

Children who have been perfectly healthy at birth may fail to thrive at weaning.  They may become irritable, have diarrhoea, vomiting, and pass pale stools.  Older children may just stop growing and have less obvious symptoms.

Coeliac disease can have a genetic link

One in 10 close relatives of a person diagnosed with coeliac disease may also be affected, so family screening is recommended.

Coeliac disease is closely associated with other medical conditions

People with the following conditions have a higher risk of developing coeliac disease: Type 1 Diabetes, Downs Syndrome and a range of auto-immune diseases including Thyroid Disease, Liver Disease, Addisons Disease and Sjorgen Syndrome.
If you are concerned about any of these related conditions please seek medical advice.
