If you think you might have some of the symptoms of coeliac disease we recommend that you make an appointment to visit your GP for further investigation.
Blood tests are now widely used to help screen for the condition. Self-testing kits can be a useful starting point, but are not 100% accurate.
A Gastroenterologist will confirm if you definitely have coeliac disease by carrying out in an out-patient clinic, an intestinal biopsy, known as an endoscopy. A small section of the lining of the bowel is taken and the villi are examined under a microscope.
In order for the biopsy to be accurate it is important to remain on a gluten-containing diet prior to the test.
